Bartending School
Bartending School is a two week course, four hours a day, four days a week. That is thirty-two hours of schooling to finish the entire course. You have to arrive on time every day. If you arrive more than fifteen minutes late you have to take that day of class over. That means graduation day will be 1 day further away. Also, if you miss three days of class in a row, you are charged an additional $95.00. You will need to commit yourself. Do not let family or friends influence you in any way.
First day of class you need to,
Class starts with understanding basic bar equipment, bar measurements, bar techniques, bar station, mixes, garnishes, glassware, setting up and breaking down a bar, and bar clean up from the book that's provided.
That night you have to study all of that, so you are ready for day two. The second day starts mixing cocktails.
Every day you have one hour of book class, a fifteen minute break, then start mixing the drinks you were taught that day. First, you make the drinks by looking at your book (it has the recipes in it). Then you make the drinks from your index cards (you wrote on). You write the name of the drink and the ingredients on the front of your index cards and the name of the drink on the back of the index cards. While mixing your drinks your instructor comes over to you and orders a drink (from that days lesson). It was up to you to make it right. You needed to get the drink correct or you had to explain what you did wrong and re-make the drink.
All of your mixology studies (mixing drinks) are made with colored water in the alcohol bottle by name brands. No real alcohol was used. The garnishes were colored cut out pieces of foam, matching the fruit colors. You use real bar equipment. You are in a real bar set-up station. You have everything you need to mix all the drinks you were taught.
You will have 2 midterm tests. You have to pass them with at least an 85% score. Your final test is a mixology practical test (making drinks in front of the instructor) which involved making twelve drinks in seven minutes. You do not know what those twelve drinks were until the test began. If you made all twelve drinks in seven minutes you graduated and received your Bartending Certificate.
There was an option to enroll into the schools job placement program. This program helped you find a bartending job. Or you go out to look for a bartending job on our own. In the class you were taught how to find employment, customer service and how to bartend a party.
It was an option to take the TIPS class. The school does not require you to take it. There's an additional fee of $35.00. Some states do require you to take the class. You will need to see if it is required where you live.
The TIPS class is five hours long and normally it is on a Saturday. Our TIPS class was right at the Bartending School. In class you have a book to follow as you are being taught, called; "The importancy of knowing a bartenders responsibilities". There were films to view and short quizzes throughout the class. After class you take the TIPS test. It only took a few minutes to see if you passed and get your TIPS certificate.
